Anglo American

The development of the Mafube mine required Anglo American to employ over 1800 employees and contractors to complete the project within 18 months. The majority of the workforce was rightfully recruited from the local doorstep community.

This presented the management team with the unique challenge of effectively onboarding new employees with limited literacy levels and work experience within a short period, enabling them to work in a high-risk environment that is mine construction.

Our Solution

In collaboration with the management team, we integrated the Snakes & Hazards methodology into Anglo’s compliance structure with an emphasis on understanding workplace hazards and effective risk communication in the team through enhancing Anglo’s standard hazard identification and risk assessment process.

We created an induction program that all employees and contractors needed to pass through before working on site. During these high-impact sessions, we introduced the Snakes & Hazards methodology, the program tools, and reporting process.

In the workplace, we introduced a visual hazard reporting board as a backdrop to their pre-shift meeting and trained the supervisors to effectively facilitate the engagement session.

In support of the program, we developed a range of visual communication (signage) based on the operation’s critical risks as well as a set of critical risk films. We built a mobile media unit that enabled us to reach each team on site, where they worked for engagement sessions.

Anglo’s team delivered the project on time, within budget, and without a single lost time injury.
